Poppy Jamie’s showreel for 2014 is outrageous. Golfing in an oversized pink visor with Samuel L. Jackson, taking tea with Cameron Diaz, and crying with laughter alongside Jude Law after falling off her chair, there is undoubtedly something Bridget Jones-esque and undeniably charming about this young British presenter. “I’m happy,” said Will Ferrell in an interview, “but you’re super happy.”

At 19 Poppy Jamie became the youngest ever entertainment correspondent at one of the UK’s largest news organisations, ITN. Five years later, demand has taken the young presenter across the pond to L.A. to present for MTV. Sitting with Poppy to discuss her adopted hometown it quickly becomes apparent that the girl on screen is far from an act. Naturally charismatic and bubbly, sentences are interrupted by an extraordinary laugh and often end with the exclamation “I die!” She has the enthusiasm of an American, with the effortless air of a Brit, which is precisely why she’s made it stateside.

Although Poppy cites London and New York as her natural habitats, it’s easy to see how she would slot easily into life in L.A. “It sounds clichéd, but in L.A. your fate can change in a night. It’s a city which rewards the fearless, the courageous and the people who say yes to everything.”

At 18 Poppy went from the girl “who would give away revision notes reluctantly” to being kicked out of her A-Level exam for a phone call and consequently rejected from Bristol University. A few fearless moves later and she had taken a job in celebrity gifting at festivals and interviewing on her flip phone, was accepted into LSE, and set up her own university channel interviewing media moguls “so that afterwards I could ask them for a job.” The second interview she did was for the head of ITN who offered her a job to start the next week.

“ITN was right next to LSE so I would get up at 4AM, write essays until 7AM, go to work and do the news bulletin, go to lectures, do the red carpets at night and then start writing essays again. I did that for 2 years, and then I graduated, started doing ITV 2, then moved to America.”

This tornado, as described by Jude Law, now travels between London and L.A. presenting for ITN, ITV2 and MTV. She’s happiest working in West Hollywood but will take a rare day off in Venice or Malibu. She prefers healthy day activities such as hiking or yoga on the beach and for the most part steers clear of Hollywood clubs which house “an underbelly of broken dreams.”

Poppy cites Urth Caffé and hiking up the L.A. mountains with a smoothie as part of her SUITCASE Magazine guide, but in the same breath profusely apologises for how “utterly L.A. this all must sound.” Still very much a Brit at heart, this is her expat guide to Los Angeles.

How to Get Around

People always say get a car when you’re in L.A. I’m a terrible driver. My first week in L.A., I got in a big pile up as I thought I was supposed to let the people on the side of the road cross. Now you don’t have to rent a car thanks to Uber X. To rent a car under 25 with insurance is horrendously expensive. Get Uber X’s everywhere and it will end up being cheaper.

If you are coming from London try and beat the jet lag in the first two days. It is so easy to get into the habit of going to bed early. Get drunk on the first night and stay up until at least midnight.

You meet more people doing day activities than nighttime, so get involved. Say yes to everything and stay open minded. LA is a city which rewards the fearless.

To Stay

Chateau Marmont

It is so over-the-top L.A., but there is a magical Gatsby vibe to this hotel that I can’t ignore. Although I could never afford to stay here, just going for breakfast, lunch or tea will give you enough of an experience. It’s old Hollywood and iconic.

The London

The most amazing thing about The London is the rooftop pool. It’s also in an incredible location in the heart of West Hollywood. It has good rates, cool people and a young vibe. Did I mention the rooftop pool?
