Vintage queen Bay Garnett has done it again. Launching this week, her collaboration with “the London girl’s denim brand” M.i.h Jeans entitled “Golborne Road” is the ultimate cool gal collection, inspired by West London in the 90s. And who better to have spearheaded the project than a woman who pretty much coined the term “thrifting” after her teenage shopping habits?

Bay began rummaging for one-off pieces on Portobello Road and in friends’ wardrobes, and carries an essence of free-spirited 90s style, telling us, “As a Central Saint Martins student in the 90s, we […] were inspired by the burgeoning style scene coming out of West London. It was a heady combination of irreverence and nostalgia; mixing vintage, denim and streetwear in a way that was accessible and in complete contrast to the hyper-glossy luxury of the 80s and early 90s.”

She carried her knack for spotting noteworthy vintage threads over to her professional life when she co-founded the fanzine Cheap Date with her friend Kira Jolliffe by featuring her second-hand finds in the issues. From there, she caught British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman’s eye and ended up collaborating with the magazine, bringing in her keen ability to mix old and new. Her first gig? Styling Kate Moss to be photographed at home in Regent’s Park by Juergen Teller. Not a bad way to dive into a career in fashion.

Thankfully, Bay’s love of the derisive nature of pre-2000s style hasn’t gone anywhere. The stylist explains: “This sense of fashion counter culture as well as the rebelliousness of denim continues to be the driving force behind my creative approach today”. This brilliantly shines through the Golborne Road collection – one immediately spots its young, wild side brought out by fun fabrics and cuts of denim so perfect they’ll make you wonder how you ever survived without them.

This wonderfully scaled-down collection features eight eclectic pieces, each one holding its own unique backstory. Think impossible-to-find-elsewhere vintage studded denim jackets, Bay’s favourite wide-leg jeans (which she used to style Vogue shoots, as well as Chloe Sevigny) and Anita Pallenberg’s very own 70s velour henley, all of which come directly from Bay’s personal collection of pieces lovingly amassed over the years. There are also original 90s thrift store gems in the mix, so you’ll find the likes of an embroidered peasant top, a camo shirt and a 70s-style logo tee to pair with Bay’s easy-to-wear denim. This assortment is made to be mixed and matched to achieve crafty Walkman-era style, so make like Naomi Campbell and throw that studded jacket on over the embroidered satin dress to give it a funky edge. It’s vintage London style being brought back to life for today’s Notting Hill girl, and we’re all over it.
