While many are looking towards Sweden, Denmark and Norway for inspiration on how to perfect their hygge this winter, there is another reason to put the spotlight on Scandinavia – and it’s not because of the stunning furniture or cosy homes. Instead, we’re paying homage to its beauty industry which, like Scandi-design, has its values firmly rooted in simplicity. From well-established international brands to niche labels, SUITCASE has curated an edit of some of the finest products.
Established in 2010, Oslo-based skincare brand Alexander Sprekenhus uses plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients of only the finest quality. Its products span from hair cosmetics and skin therapies to body care and gift kits, the latter including beautiful marble pedestals to showcase your latest purchases. Together with its minimalist packaging, the result is undeniably Scandinavian.
Try: Suitable for all skin types, the Body Lotion uses aromatic oils to replenish dry skin. Ideal after a shower or bath, the oil deeply conditions and invigorates. It’s a true beauty hero.
NUORI founder Jasmi Bonnén is turning the beauty industry on its head, challenging conventional products in terms of both efficacy and purity. In its Danish laboratory, skincare is blended in small batches every 12 weeks before being decanted into sleek white packaging. Such freshness, Bonnén contends, gives NUORI products the same properties as fresh food – they’re more nourishing and require less additives. This is skincare at its most honest.
Try: We love the Vital Hand Cream, a luxurious blend of botanical squalane, shea butter, grapeseed and almond oils. It deeply moisturises dry hands, while vitamin E and white tea extract protect the skin against free radicals. The addictive scent and creamy texture coupled with playful packaging make it a pleasure to use.
Ocean Mist Range, Sachajuan, £18-20
Sachajuan began life in 1997 as a modest salon in Stockholm. Today, having launched its own product line in 2004, it has become well-known as Sweden’s most iconic hair brand. Founded by hairdressers Sacha Mitic and Juan Rosenlind, the company takes a less-is-more approach to hair care – the minimalist-packaged products are easy to use and fuss-free.
Try: Try the Ocean Mist Volume shampoo, conditioner and spray. Sachajuan’s unique formula consists of natural vegetable proteins which strengthen hair and protect against breakage. Each product is enriched with algae, leaving hair shiny yet weightless, and naturally fragranced with ginger and citrus notes.
Oliver Peoples, BYREDO, £105
SUITCASE loves a niche fragrance brand and few fit the bill quite like BYREDO. Founded in 2006 by Stockholm-based Ben Gorham, who was born to an Indian mother and a Canadian father, the brand refuses to follow trends. Its understated approach results in unparalleled scents that continue to stir our senses each season.
Try: Celebrating one year of collaboration, BYREDO and sunglasses brand Oliver Peoples have introduced a limited edition 2016 collection, coordinating unisex eyewear and fragrance. Inspired by the beauty of perceiving LA through different coloured lenses – indigo, champagne and green – the scents are compellingly spicy yet fresh.
Day Cream, Verso, £85
Named after the Latin term for reverse, Stockholm-based beauty brand Verso strives to be revolutionary, pure and innovative in every sense – and succeeds at it too. SUITCASE loves that it’s at once unpretentious yet effective. Verso uses revolutionary ingredients such as anti-ageing Retinol 8 – a vitamin A complex that is eight times more potent than the commonly used traditional retinol.
Try: The Day Cream is a modern classic. Moisturising, protecting and hydrating, Retinol 8 helps to stimulate skin’s natural collagen production. Though the cream may be a pricier investment, a little goes a long way. Like this? You’ll also love Verso’s Lip Serum, it’s most recent launch, that also uses the same retinol complex to soften and plump lips.
Hair Potion, Sakhi Copenhagen, 395 kr/£36
For Farah Sakhi, founder of the eponymous Copenhagen-based brand, beauty is about purity. Of Afghan-Persian origin, the entrepreneur adapts Eastern traditions of healing and wellness to our contemporary needs. Focusing on wholesome, nourishing ingredients, Sakhi’s products are based on organic nigella oil, a bioactive superseed or that is also known in Arabic as the blessed seed.
Try: The Hair Potion blends organic nigella, cedarwood, peppermint and argan oils resulting in an intensive treatment for both hair and scalp, which not only repairs and strengthens, but it also stimulates hair growth for thicker and more voluptuous looking hair.
