For the month of February Winter SUITCASE will be home to a number of works from the World Wide Women collective.
Founded in 2012 by fine-art photographer and artist Anouska Beckwith, the collective features an all-female, international group of artists and photographers who seek to represent the free spirit of women in the contemporary art world. Working across a number of mediums the collective aims to empower and support young women as they begin their creative careers.
Their first exhibition ‘Ritual’, curated by New York gallerist Andy Potamkin, explores the different stages involved in the ritualistic act: memory, sacrifice, revenge and longing. For underwater photographer extraordinaire Claudia Legge, water is at the centre of her connection to the ritual theme, with its ability to silence the clutter and turmoil of inner thoughts. Her photo ‘Rebirth’ is a celebration of her connection with nature’s greatest lifeline.
The experience of viewing the collection will take the observer on a journey, giving insight into personal acts of ritual experienced by each of the artists. Benedicte Lux’s work explores the connection of ritual with a sense of place. Each of the places depicted are of deep personal significance to her – whether it is her family home in Norway in ‘the universe sings (softly) sweetly’, or Adam’s Peak, a pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians in Sri Lanka in ‘Echoic Memoriam.’ While Jeaneen Lund’s piece also draws on her connection to a place, her real engagement with the theme is evident through her focus on dancing and nudity, two rituals which she felt allowed her complete and truthful expression in the most personal of forms.
To explore more of these works stop by Winter SUITCASE, 172 Fulham Road, SW10 9PR.
