This event was held in promotion of Volume 29: The Taste Issue

When we decided to make the winter 2019 issue of SUITCASE Magazine all about food and drink, we knew that rather than only providing a roll call of Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, we also wanted to look at the ways that food can bring us pleasure, bring us together, and form a true insight into the soul of a destination.

To celebrate the launch of The Taste Issue we paired up with luxury retailer MATCHESFASHION to host an extravagant dinner party in the Attic at 5 Carlos Place, bringing the issue’s article on Palestinian culinary culture to life with a group feast that illustrated the joyful crossover of food, travel and culture.

Amid a sumptuous scattering of vibrant flowers, fabrics and flickering candles, Palestinian chef Joudie Kalla served up a sharing menu of authentic Middle Eastern dishes including pomegranate-speckled lentil and aubergine stew, roasted beetroot dip, green falafel with tahini sauce, lamb makloubeh and aubergine pitta bake, finishing with a knafeh cheesecake soaked in orange-blossom syrup and scattered with rose buds.

Contributors past and present, chefs and food experts broke (pitta) bread with us over Palestinian wines and lively conversation, before going home with a copy of the Taste Issue and Joudie’s first cookbook, Palestine on a Plate, as well as a gift voucher for MATCHESFASHION and a box of Palestinian medjool dates from social enterprise Zaytoun.

A huge thank you to MATCHESFASHION for kicking off the first of our three supper clubs to launch the Taste Issue, with Sicilian and Cretan events to follow.
