Story: As the most sparsely populated country in Europe, Iceland is filled with enough empty space to make you feel like you have the entire island to yourself.

Scattered with about 130 volcanoes and an abundance of waterfalls (Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss seen here), black sand beaches, blue lagoons, glaciers and lava fields, the place really does conjure up images of ice trolls, elves and other mythological creatures – all things the island has been associated with for years.

Unfortunately I missed the Northern Lights on my trip there, but it didn’t matter – the endless rainbows, whimsical rock formations and incredible waterfalls more than made up for it.
