Story: There are many elements that make up the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar, especially the colours which are highlighted in the below photo diary. The strong Buddhist culture prevalent across cities and villages is not afraid of bright yellow, bold gold, neon pink and red – local attire always features bursts of these colours, too. Despite the poverty and delicate political situation, the people here are overwhelmingly friendly and ready to welcome guests with a warm smile.

The cities are busy, polluted and structurally chaotic, whilst the countryside has the freshest air one can imagine, with much of the land given over to farming products such as rice, potatoes, garlic and chili. Don’t be afraid if you come across wild grazing water buffalos during countryside exploration, and embrace the green tea that is always at the center of every table. Travelling in Myanmar encourages you to learn about life, in a way that you never knew existed before.

Maxine’s travel photography from Myanmar will feature in an exhibition, The Colours of Myanmar, that runs from 8th October – 3rd November at the Ritzy in Brixton.  See her website for more photography.
