tumi

After Samsonite (the world’s largest luggage company) announced it would acquire TUMI in March 2016 for the sum of $1.8billion, it was clear that luggage was on the cusp of a new frontier. Aligning the everyman’s travel brand with luxury player TUMI would mean a change to travel norms. In September 2016, Victor Sanz was appointed Creative Director of TUMI and the shift was palpable.

With a background in art and design, Victor has refined TUMI’s aesthetic by focusing on the modern travellers’ needs and expectations. Jetting from the brand’s New Jersey headquarters to far-flung destinations, there’s no better man to flag the best hotels worldwide. Whether travelling for business, pleasure or a little of both, be sure to keep Victor’s hotel edit close at hand.

Which is your favourite beach hotel?

Il San Pietro di Positano on the Amalfi Coast. It’s one of the best places to disconnect, relax, and recharge.

Business hotel?

The Aman hotel in Tokyo – it’s a beautiful space with world-class amenities.

What about for a romantic getaway?

The Ventana Hotel in northern California sits right on the edge of Big Sur so the views are incredible. Plus, you can spend the day driving up and down the coast exploring.

Which is the best experiential hotel?

The 5-Million Star Hotel in Skalholt, Iceland is something else. The rooms are clear spheres or “bubbles” so that you can really immerse yourself in the surroundings.

Hotel Puerta America Madrid – it’s all about the aesthetic, all the time.

Where throws the best party?

The W Hotel is always a party.

Do you ski?

Yes, we usually ski in Vail in Colorado where we prefer to rent a house rather than stay in a hotel. It’s easier to hang out with family and friends that way.

Where can we find the best hotel gym?

The Fontainebleau Miami Beach because it’s easy to take your workout to the beach and they offer daily classes.

Where’s the best hotel restaurant?

The Nomad Hotel NYC has a rotating seasonal menu which is always fantastic.

Where is the best hotel bar?

Again, it would have to be the Nomad – it’s easy to get to and there’s always a great vibe inside.

And finally, what’s the best hotel overall?

It all depends on what the purpose of the trip is. For business, it’s best to be in the centre of the city but on holiday, I love to be out in the countryside or on the beach.
