Vanessa Rees, who recently received the Best Food Photographer prize at the Framed Awards, founded her studio V.K. Rees in 2009. In 2013 she was named Saveur Magazine’s Best Food Photographer, and has been styling and snapping for such brands as Ralph Lauren, Food & Wine Magazine and Hendrick’s Gin from her Brooklyn studio for the last few years.
After starting out as a blogger, Vanessa began building her brand further, recognising the pros and cons of being attached to the blogging realm. “Blogging can pigeonhole you,” she tells us, “it can be a hard label to shake off and while it’s a great way to get your work seen, it can keep incredibly talented photographers from getting higher paid advertising jobs.”
With her knowledge of social media, Vanessa has established followings from all corners of the food world. “My goals just keep evolving,” she says, “I always thought that once I achieved my earliest goals I would be satisfied, but that’s just not how it works. Occasionally I achieve a certain goal only to find out the experience totally sucked and I have to reevaluate the path I’m heading down.”
With brands like Midnight Moon, Goop and Culture Yogurt turning to her for images, Vanessa is steadily building a reputation in the photography sphere. Her colourful shots tread the line between artful and classical, and it is her unique eye and effortless talent behind the lens that has won her the mounting respect of the food world in recent times.
