Le Baron

After sitting empty for a decade, a former piano bar and restaurant in the Espaço Chiado shopping centre has been transformed into the new Le Baron nightclub. The red velvet booths and plush carpet remain and, in line with the opulent old-world interior, a groove-focused music policy keeps locals and well-informed visitors dancing until 4am from Wednesday to Saturday every week.

Café Klandestino

Rua do Benformoso in Intendente was once the most salacious street in the city and, although the Bangladeshi butchers and multi-ethnic convenience stores have created a community, it’s still firmly off the traveller’s trail. Café Klandestino, a low-lit speakeasy-style bar named after its underground location, is likely to change all that. Here cocktails are bold and its padrón pepper margarita and gin, Campari, vermouth and white truffle ‘Trufita’ will require adventurous taste buds.

Pensao Amor

Expect anything from cabaret and drag to secret banquets, piano recitals and readings of great Portuguese and Brazilian authors here at this cavernous café by day, bar and club by night. Set on the rowdy Pink Street, come here and nestle among the vintage furniture and colourful characters while sipping fantastic cocktails. After midnight it gets very busy so head down early for the best viewing spots.

The Insolito

Translation: The Unusual. This is where hip but unpretentious Lisboetas come to ride the comical two-by-two elevator up to an alfresco yet undercover cocktail bar with incredible city views. The whole experience of reaching the rooftop is intimate and memorable, just like their friendly staff and powerful martinis.
