Misono Building

A collection of small, eccentrically themed bars nestled inside a slightly dilapidated building which houses a waterfall in the lobby – this is the type of place which reminds visitors they’re in Japan, with its particular brand of quirk. The corridors are reminiscent of grungy student bars, lined with peeling posters and mismatched decor, but behind each door is a themed surprise, from goth bars to drinking holes lined with ready-to-play video game consoles. An entire evening can be enjoyed hopping from bar to bar.

Shinka (literally “deepening”) is named to indicate the theme of this unusual bar, which is entirely decked out as though patrons are enjoying drinks aboard a submerged submarine. Details are everything here; a steel entrance along with piping, pressure gauges and peep holes dotted all over the bar’s walls complete the look.

Jigokudani (meaning “hell valley”) is a labyrinth of small bars nestled in tiny streets near Noda Station. Like something out of Midnight Diner, these mini watering holes host only seven or so seats, but make up for the lack of space with the warmth of the owners. Jigokudani Meido Bar is one of those spots you spend your holiday hoping you’ll happen upon. Its owner, Kazuhide Yokota, will give you stories to take home, along with a series of mean cocktails.
