Where to Drink in Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK

Lyme Regis Brewery

Stroll across the cobbled courtyard to the former malthouse of the 14th-century Town Mill (a working flour mill and creative enclave) where you’ll stumble upon Lyme’s only microbrewery. Hop into the taproom to quaff tipples with locally inspired names such as “Dorset Pearl English Pale Ale” and “Cobb Seafarer’s Session Bitter”, as well as West Country cider and wine. Best enjoyed in summer when live music filters in from outside.

The recipe for a much-loved café can be found at Aroma, where locally roasted coffee and an arm-length menu of loose leaf teas scrawled across a chalkboard are served beneath rafters strung with fairy lights. The atmosphere is homely bohemian, akin to walking into a local’s living room – indeed you’ll knock elbows with many Lyme Regis residents here. Insider tip: order the brownie studded with pear, pecans and dark chocolate.

Amid Giants & Idols

At the (not-so) bustling heart of Lyme Regis, Amid Giants & Idols serves single-origin brews from micro-roasters across the South West – including Exeter’s Crankhouse Coffee and Somerset’s Brazier Coffee Roasters – though our order is always the “Coast” house blend, roasted in a vintage Swadlo machine in a shed at the back of the shop. Check online for meet-the-roaster evenings.

In a town as old and winding as Lyme Regis, it’s perhaps unsurprising that weather-beaten pubs and historic inns serve as the meeting point for many locals. People spill outside in summer; in winter, these places offer that welcoming kind of warmth that steams up windows and makes your heart sing. The Cobb Arms and The Volunteer Inn are great spots, though we love The Nag’s Head on a Saturday, when musicians play late into the evening.
