First Avenue

First Avenue should be your first port of call for a night out, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of ages battling it out on the dancefloor – the very one that laid witness to some of the seminal scenes in Purple Rain. Look out for the teenage Puerto Rican brothers in wife beaters dancing mime, extravagant queens voguing their way into the dance circle and mothers stripping a layer and rubbing against anything that moves: this place is truly alive and kicking in a way that touches on the progressive and inclusive nature Prince was famous for. Outside, you find a gold star-named wall of fame displaying everyone who’s ever played here.

Dakota Jazz Club

The city’s most celebrated jazz bar will make you feel at ease whether you’re living it up at the front or brooding in the dark at the back sipping a martini. It’s also the place you’re most likely be spun around by a smiling stranger to the tune of a revered New Orleans brass troupe. Get dinner delivered to your table without ceasing your foot tap, and ask friendly staff to point out Prince’s favourite table – this was one of his haunts.

Gay 90s

Don’t miss popping your head into this multi-floored, notorious disco spot. Garishly decorated and lit up with a diverse and welcoming crowd, it is the perfect place for cheesy pop, knocking back local beer and reflecting on the “mini apple”. For a nightcap, there are lots of both dive and high-end cocktail bars scattered within a stone’s throw.
