This café, bistro and patisserie first opened in 1904 and still channels the same art nouveau vibe, completed by beautiful chandeliers, large windows and plenty of mirrors. It brings a French twist to classic German frühstück (breakfast); come in the morning for freshly made croissants, cheese or charcuterie platters and the best omelettes in town.

Located in the Plagwitz neighbourhood, Chumumi is where creative types meet for generously portioned (but surprisingly cheap) curries, noodles and pho. The decor lacks the naffness of many Asian eateries, and the hearty food make it an ideal stop after a day of exploring.

Leipzig has a solid selection of vegan and vegetarian dining options and Zest is one of the best, with surprisingly imaginative meat-free dishes. Book ahead, as the inventive plates – including soy steaks, cashew croquettes and cheesy sweet potatoes with mint-parsley pesto – attract many carnivorous Germans. A good option for upscale food in a relaxed environment.
