Framed by the sun-kissed Versilia coast and the Apuan Alps, this cosmopolitan seaside town on the Tuscan Riviera revolves around glamorous beach clubs, high-end fashion and sparklingly fresh seafood. Dive in.

Thought Tuscany was all crumbling farmhouses and golden fields? Forte dei Marmi says otherwise. Lazing in the shadows of the Apuan Alps and dipping its toes in the Mediterranean Sea, this suntrap of a town is a buzzy, metropolitan enclave strewn with tasteful boutiques and seafood trattorias which pull throngs of discerning visitors each summer.

It’s not a place for those who’d prefer to stay indoors. Whether you’re cycling under pines, driving through tunnels burrowed into the marble-and-limestone mountains, sipping an early-evening Aperol or haggling for a fragment of vintage Missoni evening wear at the town’s famed market on Piazza Marconi, Forte dei Marmi begs you to dive in.

To Stay

Villa Grey

Don’t be put off by the name. There’s nothing dreary about this 20th-century villa, which has a private palm-fringed park lavished with pillowy loungers out the back. You probably won’t be surprised to read that, from the kitchen chefs’ aprons to the embroidered beach towels, everything here is washed in a sophisticated palette of oh-so-subtle grey.

Villa Roma Imperiale

Despite its rather grandiose name, this hotel feels like a luxurious homestay. The decoration is stylish but comfortable – think beds framed by billowing sheets of coarse linen, rattan sofas and marble floors lain with jute rugs. In the hotel’s beach house, you’ll find platters of food on offer throughout the day – snacks to be nibbled at your leisure. As we said: homely.

Augustus Hotel & Resort

Commonly referred to as the Kennedys of Italy, the Agnelli family is well known among Italians. Its fame and fortune primarily stem from having co-founded Fiat as well as currently owning Ferrari. As you might expect, this modish mansion right on the coast has everything – including a bagno (a beach club of sorts), sprawling gardens and two heated pools.
