Lamu’s largely Muslim culture means you won’t find any dedicated bars on the island – not even an Irish pub (phew). But the the iconic Peponi Hotel in Shela and stylish Majlis Resort provide plenty to entertain thanks to impressive cocktail menus and eclectic clientele.

Peponi

When Alice Temperley describes a place as having a “sceney mix”, you know you’re onto a serious social goldmine – and Peponi’s definitely delivers island-style hip in spades. Sit back and imbibe alongside an eclectic bunch of people from Hollywood directors to notorious Shela beach boys, with a cooling onshore breeze making it the perfect spot for an aperitif. The hotel verandah extends along the beach front and is enveloped in blooming jasmine that bathes the balmy night air in tropical scent. If you’re staying in Shela, saunter home barefoot along the beach and well-lit alleyways – the area is generally safe to walk unhindered, though it’s good to keep your wits about you wherever you are.

Majilis Resort

The ever-Instagrammable Majlis Resort is comprised of three beachfront villas owned by a wealthy Italian family, accessible via a five-minute water taxi from Shela. When you arrive on Manda beach, make a beeline for the sparkling aqua pool by the elaborate alabaster cocktail lounge. This sexy pool bar’s high ceilings, plantation palms, white-linen loungers and open-air arches host an old-school Kenyan cocktail list – their G&T’s are the best there are.
