Drink Lots of Coffee

There’s no denying that Melbourne is one of the best for coffee culture. And lets face it, not many of us need convincing to make a pit stop for a brew – especially when its as good as what the city’s abundance of cafés have on offer. For a morning kick, and frankly, a booster in between, check out micro roaster and café, Seven Seeds.

The National Gallery of Victoria

Australia’s oldest and most visited gallery, it’s always a treat to stop by the National Gallery of Victoria, not least for its substantial collection of over 70,000 works from original Australian Aboriginal art to post-colonial pieces. While you are there, take a stroll along the Southbank’s Yarra River and make sure take a peek inside Crown Casino, the southern hemisphere’s largest, or visit the adjacent 36-hectare Royal Botanical Gardens.

Explore the laneways and arcades

Melbourne is all about its grand Victorian arcades and laneways (those hidden cobble thoroughfares). The most famous of these is Hosier Lane, a little alley best known for its evolving street art. Elsewhere, Market Lane is a fragrant entryway to Chinatown, where iconic restaurants like HuTong Dumpling House are a must visit, while the ornate French renaissance architecture at Block Arcade houses stores like Crabtree & Evelyn and Georg Jensen.

Great Ocean Road Drive

For a day out, hire a car and meander along the Great Ocean Road, arguably one of the best road trips in the world. Stretching over 250km, start in Torquay and make sure you stop off at iconic sights such as The Twelve Apostles, Gibson Steps and London Arch.
