Where to Shop in Bruton, Somerset, UK

Fri, 8 May 2020

Somerset is famed for its countryside; this floral design studio brings the outdoors in. Former interior architect and Lunaria founder Deborah Bain is a blooming magician when it comes to making bespoke, back-to-nature arrangements. She invites you into her studio and shop to browse a selection of rare indoor plants along with haute pots and botanical themed prints.

Like stepping into a Pinterest-board of Scandi inspiration, this lifestyle store-studio hybrid is achingly hip. Its edit of all things Nordic chic features recycled-denim jumpsuits, bougie stationery, earthy ceramics and chic “mis en place” – we’re not saying you need a shell-shaped tray, but it would be a pity not buy one. In-vogue brands stocked here include womenswear label Sideline, Kana ceramics, Hay and Aesop. Don’t miss Caro’s choccies (a collab with the local Chocolate Society); they’re beautiful to look at and even better to taste.

Rose & Lyons

Across the street from Caro, Rose & Lyons serves Bruton’s cool crowd with a good dose of warmth – this independent lifestyle boutique is “passionate about colour, style and all things good”. Head here for floaty cotton dresses by Lolly’s Laundry, boho homewares and British-made skincare from Bramley and all-natural brand No Lies.

Fifty High Street

If you’re a fan of throwback, utilitarian homeware, you’ll love Fifty High Street, a collaborative venture between London’s Labour and Wait and the team behind Hole & Corner magazine. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship and heritage, peddling the kind of well-made household items that will never go out of style alongside a calendar of demonstrations by makers.

Swan Vintage

A rainbow of clashing prints, 50s tea dresses, beaded cardigans and retro denim, Swan Vintage is an Aladdin’s cave of pre-loved threads and accessories handpicked by owner Zoe Ford. Fittingly, the shop is something of a gem in Bruton, at once joyful and eco-friendly.

Phillips & Skinner

Bruton is a treasure trove of antiques shops and upmarket curios. Phillips & Skinner has been prime territory for a rummage since it opened in 2007, when founder Amelia Skinner’s collection of rare and unusual objects became too large for her family home. Like this? Extend your hunt to the West End, where Alchemy has sourced decorative antiques from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Westcombe Dairy

A 10-minute drive out of Bruton, this artisan dairy has been famed for its seriously tangy, nutty cheddar (there’s even a documentary about it) since the early 1900s. This, along with other West Country cheeses, are made using unpasteurised milk from its own, pampered, pasture-raised cows. We couldn’t get enough of the Duckett’s Caerphilly and Somerset ricotta, but if you’re not a lover of dairy try Westcombe’s charcuterie or brews from the Wild Beer Company which shares the site. The tours here are great; the tastings, even better.

Stock up on truckles (and tasting samples) of creamy Godminster cheddar from this Station Road dairy, which boasts Great Taste Awards and International Cheese Awards among its virtual trophy cabinet. Set on the outskirts of Bruton, its 1,300-acre organic, bio-diverse farm was first recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book. Today it’s home to 320 dairy cows (better known as the “Godminster Girls”) as well as fruitful orchards, so don’t be surprised to see some cider in here too – you’ll need something to wash down the cheese, after all.
