Kensington Market

If one-of-a-kind style is up your street, it’ll be worth paying a visit to Kensington Market. A lively and dynamic pocket of the city, in which you’ll find cuisine from across the world and painted murals on every other corner, Kensington Market is home to some of the city’s best vintage shopping. Set aside a full afternoon for snooping through rails of clothing and endless accessories. Stores you shouldn’t miss include Bungalow and Exile.

Monkey’s Paw

Home to an extensive collection of unusual vintage books, Monkey’s Paw is a portal to other realms – both fictional and non-fiction – in shop form. Famed throughout the city for its most curious stash of old literature and antique paper artefacts, it is popular among locals and visitors alike. By far its biggest intrigue, though, is the Biblio-Mat within its walls; a vending machine that, upon swallowing a token (which costs $3), spits out a vintage book at random. It’s like magic.

St Lawrence Market

St Lawrence Market is an iconic Toronto landmark, and for good reason. It dates back to the 1800s, though it has undergone many changes since, and is considered by many to be one of the best food markets in the world. The South Market plays host to 120 vendors of culinary delight, including fresh fruit, meat, fish and prepared foods, while, on Sundays, the North Market welcomes 80 antiques dealers selling all manner of charming and kooky wares.

The Wanderly

Stocking a carefully curated selection of apparel, homewares, vintage clothing and more, The Wanderly is packed with all things pretty that you’ll find hard to resist stroking, sniffing and sampling as you amble around the store. Shelves and rails are graced with items sourced both locally and worldwide through partnerships with creators and small businesses, and each piece has its own story. Don’t be surprised if you don’t leave empty-handed.

Scout

Championing Canadian creators and independent artisans, Scout is a charming gift shop with two locations, one in Roncesvalles and the other in Leslieville. Both stores stock everything from greetings cards and skincare to books and babywear. If you’re after non-tacky souvenirs for yourself or friends, Scout is your go-to.
