Kampung Baru

Developed by the British in the 1890s as a Malay agricultural settlement, Kampung Baru offers a little slice of traditional Malay village life right in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre. Take a stroll among banana and coconut trees, traditional timber stilted houses and Malay colonial homes – some of which have been around for over a century. Rumah Limas, a 1913 landmark comes complete with stained-glass windows, wood-panelled walls and stone pillars.

Batu Caves

About 11 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is a century-old Hindu landmark temple constructed within the caves of a limestone hill. Its interior formations are said to date from around 400 million years ago. There are three major caves and a number of smaller ones that features idols and statues erected inside and around it. Cathedral Cave, the largest and most popular cavern, houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100-metre high arched ceiling, while the other two feature numerous Hindu statues and paintings.

A heaving ode to Malaysia’s sizeable Chinese population, Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown is a riot of sights, sounds and smells. Centred on Petaling Street, a daily street market sells everything from clothes and electronics to perfumes. Visit with an empty stomach to make the most of street-food stalls and food courts that sell Chinese favourites like Hokkien Mee, salted dry duck and beef-ball soup.

Petronas Twin Towers

Once the tallest buildings in the world and now the world’s tallest twin structures, the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers are the best spot to take in the sprawl of Kuala Lumpur. Factor in some time before or after your scheduled visit, to take a stroll through nearby KLCC Park – which features a jogging track, walking paths and a water fountain with a wading pool for children – and Suria KLCC, one of the best shopping malls in the city.
