Muir National Monument

Muir Woods lies in the middle of the redwood trees range that reaches from the California/Oregon border to Big Sur. Thanks to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the wet environment results in dense plant growth that is quite a sight to behold. A winding 30-minute drive (or Uber) from Sausalito is the forest of soaring redwoods which offer easy hiking trails. Totally different from the quick-tan hikes to take around LA, these giant trees tower over the paths, meaning the route is almost entirely in shadow beneath the canopy. A perfect place for contemplation or a breath of fresh air, the longest route takes no longer than a couple of hours and is extremely simple to navigate – leave early morning and you’ll be back in time for lunch.

Soulstice Mind + Body Spa

Soulstice Mind + Body Spa began as a massage therapy centre for the local community, attracting regulars several times a week for massage sessions or gentle yoga classes; this place is about self-care rather than crippling fitness regimes. They don’t accept online bookings for massages, as the team prefer to match clients to therapists after an in-person chat, but it’s well worth dropping in. The yoga classes are spiritual but light-hearted, taking place in a bright room with no more than 25 spots allocated to keep it intimate. Alternatively, if you’re looking for more traditional-style yoga classes, Sausalito Yoga offer 30 asana and bodywork classes per week, from power yoga to pilates.

Local Boutiques and Galleries

Supporting the community is at the core of Sausalito’s ethos, so most boutiques promote local artists and designers. As you enter the town from Golden Gate bridge, there’s a cluster of jewellery boutiques brimming with handcrafted pieces made from precious gemstones and fine metals. Head to By Land and By Sea for beach-y treasures and Lulu Designs for more sophisticated pieces, while there are a few good art galleries in the area too. Studio 333 is worth a peruse for its accessories and workshops, which range from ornamentation to fabric design. If you’re planning a picnic, Driver’s Market is a small grocery store selling a bounty of fruit and vegetables, small-batch olive oils, sandwiches and kombucha on tap.

Sausalito Bike Rentals

Although Sausalito is walkable, there’s something about pedalling along next to the waves. Pick up a bike from Sausalito Bike Rentals and spend the day cruising the coast, stopping off for ice-cream along the way. Further out of town away from the Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll find a community of multi-coloured floating homes (with tours available if you’re keen to peek inside). Many of houseboat residents are artists and this is reflected in flamboyant decorations; wander through the neighbourhood and meet the people who have made the water their own.
