Pint Shop

Pint Shop is inspired by the beer houses that sprung up in the 1830s as a result of the Beer Act, which liberalised the regulations surrounding the brewing and sale of beer. Tucked away in a nondescript former office building, its pared-back, utilitarian style creates an unexpectedly convivial atmosphere. Stop by to sample some of its amazing craft beers and stay for its delicious bar snacks – try the salt beef fritters – or, if you fancy, a full-blown feast in its upstairs dining room.

Novi puts the elegance in Cambridge’s independent drinking and dining scene. Spread over three floors, its espresso bar, cocktail lounge and restaurant are adorned with marble counters, green velvet banquettes and gold-trimmed bar stools. Its bespoke cocktails make the most of botanical ingredients such as pimento which gives the Hot Dram! rum, pineapple and lime concoction a fragrant and spicy kick. On Saturdays, street food trucks and visiting chefs take over the kitchen.

Cambridge Brew House

Cambridge Brew House has brought the craft beer revolution to the city, with an eclectic selection on tap from both local and international brewers. Here, you can watch brewmaster Mark Burton hard at work while knocking back his artisan tipples. Be sure to try Chicken Porter, which was voted the best beer at Cambridge Beer Festival 2016. The pub applies the same homemade approach to food too, with an on-site smokery to cure meat, cheeses and fish.

The Eagle

This former coaching inn that dates back to the 1600s is famed as the site where James Watson and Francis Crick announced that they had discovered DNA. Today, the pub serves a special ale to commemorate the discovery, dubbed the Eagle’s DNA. History buffs shouldn’t miss The Eagle’s RAF bar where graffiti made during the Second World War can be seen on the ceiling.
