To Drink

Minton's

One of the most important locations in the history of jazz, Minton’s Playhouse was founded in 1938 by saxophonist Henry Minton, and has seen performances from the likes of Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis. The legendary jazz haunt still stands, but has been recently refurbished into a sexy supper club offering up-scale, traditional food from chef JJ Johnson (of sister restaurant The Cecil next door). We prefer to head over after dinner and grab a spot at the bar to enjoy hand-crafted cocktails as an accompaniment to the live music.

Shrine

This low-key music venue functions as one of Harlem’s favourite night clubs. On weekends expect a mix of live jazz and blues vocalists early in the evening, Afro-Caribbean artists as the night progresses and hip-hop and reggaeton DJs after midnight. Shrine hosts a full bar serving mango mojitos, lychee martinis and a curious concoction known as the Muslim Jew, as well as a working kitchen offering simple Middle Eastern fare. For night owls, the place is open until 4AM daily, but early risers can make the most of their happy hour between 4PM and 8PM – just don’t forget to bring cash, as Shrine does not accept cards.

Gin Fizz

With the seductive atmosphere of a 1920s speakeasy, Gin Fizz is another great spot for live music and cocktails. Come on Thursdays for their virtuosic Harlem Sessions, in which contemporary artists pay tribute to the music legends that made Harlem, well, Harlem. The cocktail menu is categorised according to liquor and you can pick from their list of classics or house specials. The sultry atmosphere and smooth music will set you in the right mood for the weekend.
