Bacchus & Venus Wines

If you’re looking for a quirky bottle Marcy Roth will have a few options in his tasting room. Specialising in boutique wines from California, Bacchus is home to a popular wine club which has become part of the after-work routine for many Sausalito locals. During a tasting, a characteristics sheet is provided for newbies so they can match up flavours. Because the climate in California is relatively consistent, you can forget everything you’ve learnt about vintage. Here you’ll discover plenty of Zinfandels, found only in California because of the native black-skinned grape, which have an intense flavour and pair well with spicy food. Each bottle in Bacchus has a story and Marcy is the perfect person to tell it.

Madrigal Winery

A few doors down from Bacchus, Madrigal is a winery and gallery, connected to the Madrigal vineyard in Napa Valley. Covering 800 acres, 90% of Madrigal wines are red with only one white option (this is simply down to personal preference of the owner Chris Madrigal). This winery is an easy, urban alternative option for those who may not have time to drive out to Napa but still want to get a taste of a California vineyard. Madrigal is best known for its Petit Sirah, which is outstanding, and the wine and chocolate pairings organised with the local Sausalito chocolatier “Pick Me Up” is hugely popular too.

Café Divino

This cosy joint offers Florentine cuisine (including an extensive artisan pasta selection) with a side of live music, from Cuban pianists to Brazilian violin trios. Arrive early, grab a seat and drift into a jazz trance while you sip a craft cocktail. It’s also a great place to pitch up the morning after the night before; a hearty brunch sees poached eggs and fried polenta or truffle scrambled eggs washed down with strong coffee.

No Name Bar

Sitting on the waterfront, this dive bar is the best in town for craft beer and people watching. Packed wall-to-wall with eccentric California characters keen to support their favourite local bands with live music is every night. As the regulars take the mic, the tiny bar fills with laughter and cheer; if you’re looking for an earthier side to Sausalito shine, this is a great option – simply follow the cigarette smoke.
