Trainers don’t suit us. Not at all. Neither do shiny bomber jackets or white t-shirts. But since coming back from Copenhagen, it’s all we can wear. The Danes are just fundamentally cool, and have a knack of making you feel more bulky and disheveled than ever. They float around with their silky hair and duster coats, leaving their bikes unlocked on the side of the street while they glide in and out of coffee shops with their equally glowing friends. So forgive us for wanting to bring a touch of Danish style to our ruffled London lives.
As you might have gathered by now, the cities we love most are the ones that are big enough to mindlessly wander and small enough to get to grips with in a few days. Copenhagen is the finest example of this kind of Peartopia. The leafy parks, the proud pastel buildings, the bicycle lanes just wide enough to allow for a head-on collision with an old man on an electric scooter…we can’t get enough of Denmark’s capital. As for the food, there’s everything from fine dining to street trucks. There is world-class coffee, cafés dripping with hygge (a special kind of Scandinavian cosiness), pastries at every turn and enough bars to keep soberness at bay for weeks. Here is our idea of a perfect day spent mouth-first in Scandinavia’s coolest capital…
This bright Gothersgade café serves Instagram-famous avocado on rye bread with chives, chilli and sea salt. They also serve granola with courgette, bouncy Danish pastries and delicious, strong coffee. Look out for antique touches like the 18th century mirrors, or alternatively grab a window seat and watch the beautiful people who seem to glide around two inches off the ground.
Copenhageners love all three sites of this devoted roaster, which is run by some of the city’s most famous coffee nerds. The mothership of the group is located on Godthåbsvej in the city’s fashionable Frederiksberg district, and is worth peddling your bike a little further for. Head there for a little coffee education (learn how to brew from the best/take part in a cupping) or to get a caffeine hit in the most delicious way possible (black ice coffees/creamy flat whites/banging espressos).
When the Danes want tacos, the Danes go to Hija de Sanchez. This taco stand, located in the food nirvana of Torvehallerne market, is the brainchild of ex-Noma pastry chef Rosio Sanchez. She procures all of her corn from Oaxaca for the most authentic tortillas this side of Mexico. Try succulent fillings like cod skin or beef tongue with tangy, peppery salsa. Fantastic.
If daytime drinking calls, look no further than this waterside bar, which serves delicious natural wines. (Copenhagen is swimming in low-intervention wines (wines that don’t use pesticides, herbicides) at the moment.) Head here on a sunny afternoon to enjoy the views, or find a spot at the black bar to chat to the bartender and wangle a few free swills.
‘Clean. Simple. Local.’ is the name of the game at this place, with a fresh, vibrant 6-course meal served around communal tables inside a flower-filled rooftop greenhouse. And yes, it is just as dreamy as it sounds. When we finally bite the bullet, dump our boyfriends and marry each other, the ceremony is bound to be here… Worth noting, they close for the winter season and reopen sometime in April. Be sure to check their site before going.
We are perpetually on the lookout for the next best 0ld fashioned, so were thrilled to find the punchiest, most citrus-spiked version of our favourite drink at this classic cocktail bar. The speakeasy has a long and inviting cocktail menu, and can be found behind a hidden(ish) heavy wooden door at the quiet end of the devilishly cool Norrebro district.
