Tjing Tjing

On the roof at Tjing Tjing you’ll find a lively atmosphere and a dramatic cocktail list. Sample the best otsumami (bar snacks) followed by several rounds of okonomiyaki fries downstairs. It’s lauded as one of the best Japanese kitchens in the Cape.

Arcade on Bree

This restobar is a great low-key dinner and drinks spot. Old-school style blends with contemporary finishes in surrounds that lean to the right side of kitsch. The menu is limited; choose from burgers, pizzas or salads. That’s it – and that’s all you need.

La Parada on Bree

This laid-back, open-fronted bar is a firm favourite on our list. Choose between high stools and outdoor tables to dine on a blend of Spanish tapas and cocktails. The wine list is vast and the frozen strawberry and rosemary margaritas are on tap.

Aces 'n' Spades

Rock music fans take note: this Hout Street destination is the answer for those in search of live music and a raucous night out. Head here on Wednesday night to belt out Patty Smith ballads with Jägermeister shots doing the rounds.

Sgt Peppers

Like a house party, but better. Lovers of music, dance and pizza will take to this place like a moth to a flaming sambuca.

The Village Idiot

A restaurant and bar lodged on Loop Street away from the congestion of the CBD, The Village Idiot is a popular local watering hole. Clock the giant ostrich perched in the middle of the bar on your way in and make a beeline for the soft leather booths by the crackling fire.

Situated at 70 Loop Street, Coco is about two things: high-end bottle service and good music. Whether you’re a house-music lover or a hip-hop head, a varied DJ line-up means there’s something to suit everyone.

Yours Truly

This local institution is best for drinks and chilling. Its three different spots across Cape Town cater for every vibe. Its Kloof outpost offers tempting pizzas and rooftop sundowners, in Loop expect drinks and live music (ideal on First Thursdays) and Long, the original flagship, deals in coffee and deli tasters.
