Pancake Day isn’t all rainbows and unicorns for the less skilful chefs amongst us. To avoid another catastrophe by the stove, grab your squad and satiate those cravings elsewhere.

Jackson + Rye

If it’s sugar you’re after, make your way to Jackson + Rye and ask for buttermilk pancakes with orange, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. It’s fairly cheap, averaging at around £6, or £9 when served with a healthy serving of bacon too. They have three locations — one in Soho, Chiswick, and Richmond.

The Book Club

While there aren’t as many pancake variations at The Book Club, you’ll experience great pleasure when subtle hints of tanginess hit your taste buds with their buttermilk pancakes, topped with honey and citrus, banana, berries, crème fraiche and maple syrup.

The Breakfast Club

Whether you’re after something savoury or sweet, there’s plenty to dig into at The Breakfast Club. We recommend the all American – pancakes with eggs, sausages, fried potatoes, bacon and maple syrup. There’s a vegetarian option too. With their eight locations throughout London, no matter where you are, you have an excuse to celebrate.

My Old Dutch

My Old Dutch has been a classic for Shrove Tuesday year in and out. Thanks to the endless selection available, it’s an ideal place for picky eaters and large groups. The Amsterdammer (perfectly sautéed apples with smoked bacon and maple syrup), Greek (grilled aubergine, tomato, halloumi, feta, olives, cheese, red onion and oregano) and Vermeer pancake (plain sugary pancake with a shot of Vermeer and ice-cream) are longtime favourites of ours. Their Holborn location is our go to spot, but they also have locations in Kensington and Chelsea.

The Blues Kitchen

It’s all about the tall stack of American pancakes at The Blues Kitchen, loaded with either maple syrup and bacon or blueberry and vanilla ice cream. We recommend ordering both dishes and going halves on each with your fellow diner. They have three locations: Camden, Shoreditch and Brixton.

Chez Lindsay

Lovers of French food will struggle on deciding what to order from Chez Lindsay’s extensive Les Galettes menu. There are over 15 buckwheat pancakes to choose from (decisions, decisions…) but we swear by the ‘classic fillings’, particularly fromage oignons (cheese and onion) – simple but delicious.

The Delaunay

One for those who prefer the finer things in life, this beautiful European café serves a particular dish that’ll have you returning weekly – the Lecso spiced vegetables, which is served in the softest buckwheat pancake with a fried egg. You’ll be staring at an empty plate before long.
