sant-angelo

A refreshing antidote to glitzy Capri, Ischia is definitively chill. There’s no “scene”, no bling boutiques and next-to-no tourists (for now).

Just across the water from Amalfi, it’s the favoured summer holiday spot of Neapolitans who are desperate to keep it under wraps. Indeed, visiting the volcanic islet with its blend of lazy beaches and slow-paced mindset, it’s easy to succumb to Ischia’s tempo.

Once a heady playground for the 1950s jet set, its starry quality has captured many a director’s eye (even if its energy has ebbed a little). The Talented Mr Ripley brought Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon to the island – and if that golden reference (and its club of A-list names) isn’t enough to convince you of Ischia’s appeal, our local guide offers further persuading.

As for us, we’re already strewn out on our sun loungers and ready for our next round of Ischian vermouth – if you know, you know.

TO STAY

Costa del Capitano

With sloping windows and cavern-like interiors, Costa del Capitano is charming, comfortable and spacious. All the apartments come with sea-view terraces overlooking the bay of Sant Angelo. Those taken by the views can venture down the 180-step walkway to the rocky coast, preferably pre-dinner to work up an appetite and avoid any tipsy tumbles. Head to La Tuga for sunset drinks and some light bites (a full menu is available for those who haven’t spent the day gorging on fries in the shade of their cabana).

Casa Assunta

This family-owned apartment-hotel in the storybook town of Sant’Angelo is a good choice for those who like to base themselves in one spot and stay put for the duration of their holiday. The town has an impressive roll call of amenities as well as excellent local restaurants – Dal Pescatore is a favourite – and a beautiful beach to while away days on.

Il Mezzatorre Resort & SPA

With its low-key vibe and views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, you’d be forgiven for keeping this one a secret from even your nearest and dearest. Plopped right on the bay, its best to book a room in the tower by the sea for 360-degree views and a sure sense of regality. Breakfast is a mountain of pastries and 10 different kinds of mozzarella. Spend a morning reading by the pool before enjoying a prolonged seafood lunch at the hotel and settling in to watch golden hour draw in.

Tenuta del Poggio Antico

We’re sold on this place because of its generous arches, salmon-hued walls and general Slim Aarons vibe. Set on an estate surrounded by vineyards and citrus groves, Tenuta del Poggio Antico is just a short walk from Citara beach, making for a stay that is convenient and chic in equal parts.

Albergo Il Monastero

Hands down the most unique place to stay in Ischia, Albergo Il Monastero is located on the Castello Aragonese. Residing in a medieval fortress on a small island attached to Ischia Porto, it makes for an markedly different hotel experience. The restaurant is also definitely worth a visit – and the views from the terrace are legendary.
