Leipzig is smug: it has managed to remain largely unnoticed by tourists, quietly enjoying its reign as “the new Berlin” – until recently, when whispers of the city have begun to hit higher decibels. This is where Berliners, overwhelmed by swarms of tourists, gentrification and soaring rents, are heading to build a new nest. But despite the constant comparisons, it stands apart from the capital. Historically, it has played an important role; it was here that the events leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall first shook the communist strongholds in East Germany, while it was also the place that Goethe found inspiration for Faust and Bach for his cantatas. If you’re into art, you will love it; there is no way to visit Leipzig without exploring its many galleries.
Part of the Leipzig charm exists in its DIY attitude, attracting young creatives thanks to a free-thinking, liberal attitude. Visit with an open mind and you’ll soon be scooped up into the locals’ urban adventures.
Meisterzimmer has four light-filled loft apartments in a restored Victorian cotton mill located in the trendy Spinnerei neighbourhood. The apartments are utilitarian, but nonetheless charming. Factory trolleys acting as moveable beds and hand-picked furniture adds warmth and charisma to the openness of the space will make you feel like you’re spending the night in an artist’s studio rather than a hotel. In the evening, flip through catalogues of ongoing exhibitions or skim an art book over some local Gose beer.

Tucked behind the facade of a 16th-century merchant’s townhouse with a quiet interior courtyard, the Freghaus has 20 lovely rooms. There’s a special air about the place, in which the owners have married historic architectural details with splashes of colour and simple, modern furnishings. A breakfast of fresh pastries, regional produce and homemade jam create a homely atmosphere, while it’s well-located for exploring the art exhibitions at the Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig as well the city’s shops.
