With a rich cultural history that is palpable across Central London, there is scarcely a corner untouched by the city’s storied past. From Soho’ clubs and eateries to touristy Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House, the layered history of some of London’s most popular spots may surprise you. Those determined to scout Westminster to catch a glimpse of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, do so at your leisure but please nix the Big Red Bus.

TO STAY

Hamyard Hotel

A colourful country house in the middle of the city filled with quirky décor. The ever buzzing bar and restaurant area are populated by the young and beautiful (and a few business men). It’s airy and spacious, and has every amenity that you could possibly want.

The London Edition

Far from the shabby chic aesthetic of so many hotels these days, The London Edition is all glamour, perfectly straddling the line between luxurious and cool. It’s always a hub of activity and a favourite with the fashion week set – from the lobby bar with its high stuccoed ceilings, marbled pillars and lush green velvet sofas, to Jason Atherton’s restaurant Berner’s Tavern and the Punch Room bar. Keep in mind that the glamour does come with a hefty price tag.

The Hospital Club

Formerly the site of St Paul’s hospital, there is now nothing clinical about this place. Super cool but without a hint of pretension, the vibe is intimate and relaxed, and the staff are incredibly friendly.

The Hoxton, Holborn

The Hoxton, Holborn is a new hospitality group that has managed to offer its guests exceedingly good value by doing away with hotel paraphernalia that no one really uses. The Hoxton, Holborn is the first of three properties within the group (the other two are in Shoreditch and Amsterdam). At a base rate of £89 a night you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything lacking at this hotel that would explain the low price. This is a truly no-bullshit hotel – expensive mini bar? Nope, you’ll find the milk and mineral water are complimentary in your room. Extortionate charges for using the phone? At The Hoxton, Holborn you get an hour free every day to call anywhere in the world. Obviously, wifi is free. And you get free breakfast delivered to your door in a little brown bag every morning. Downstairs the reception area blends into a buzzing café and restaurant, while in the basement you’ll find The Chicken Shop, which specialises in delicious rotisserie chicken. Check out the Cheeky nail bar and Holborn Grind café adjacent to the property.
