Where?

Medjumbe Island, Mozambique.

Why now?

With colder temperatures coming our way, we’d rather look into booking our next beach holiday than think about sorting through our heavy winter jumpers.

Perhaps the most idyllic island we’ve seen, Medjumbe Island, just off the coast of Mozambique, is the stuff of tropical dreams. Only 1km long and 500m wide, this tiny swirl of sand in the Indian Ocean is one of 32 islets in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Clusters of mangrove trees and tie-dyed aqua ripples will be your bookends, while the Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort offers 12 thatch-roofed cabins – the only accommodation on the island – for an ultra-private escape.

Don’t miss

While reading and tanning for hours are obvious must-dos, the island also offers watersports galore. As it’s part of the Quirimbas National Park, divers can explore vast stretches of untouched coral reef and spot dolphins, sea turtles and dugongs, also known as “sea cows”.

Who to bring with you

It’s a lovebird’s paradise.

When to go

Throughout the chillier months.

Most likely to bump into

Honeymooners nestling beneath a thatched umbrella.

Essentials to bring with you

A carry-on full of bikinis, sarongs and little else.

How to get there

Fly into Pemba International Airport in Mozambique, then hop on a 45-minute flight to the island, where you’ll land on the Anantara Resort’s landing strip.
