Hauser & Wirth

A four-block-long beacon that represents Downtown’s cultural shift and the neighbourhoods growth as an artist-centric community. After being left derelict for 45 years, this industrial complex was transformed by Hauser & Wirth into more than just a space for artists. Now, it’s home to a restaurant – Manuela – a public garden filled with beds of herbs and vegetables, a chicken coop (both of which service the restaurant), an education lab and Artbook – a well-curated bookshop that’s twice the size of some of the city’s galleries.

Murmurs

This community-driven space that hosts exhibitions, performances, readings, workshops and film screenings, with an underlying drive to make art more inclusive. Changing the way Angelenos approach art and chasing New York’s cultural crown, Murmurs’ environment champions collaboration-based artwork in the aim of bringing the community together. The multifaceted space also includes a café serving quality coffee and a shop.

The Broad

Its honeycomb steel exterior is as recognisable as the installations inside this modern-art museum. Natural light filters through the gallery which houses heavy hitters such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, as well as the largest Cindy Sherman collection in the US. Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room exhibition debuted here to wide acclaim and now returns for a second kaleidoscopic experience. Although admission is free, tickets sell out in advance so plan ahead or go down on a Monday – the best day to snag standby tickets.

Downtown Art Walk

The second Thursday of every month brings together art enthusiasts for a stroll around the galleries on Spring and Main Street. Film premieres, interactive installations and street-art demos are often on the calendar, giving you a chance to soak up that eclectic culture that DTLA is known for.
