Camberwell Arms

High ceilings, crown moulding, a wooden bar and an old fireplace – Camberwell Arms’ upstairs bar is oozing with rustic charm. What else would you expect from the owners of Waterloo’s Anchor & Hope and Stockwell’s Canton Arms? After a long day at work, settle into the bench seating at one of the window-side tables and treat yourself to a glass of wine. The place is quite lively on weeknights, and booking is recommended if you’d prefer to dine downstairs, but food is offered at the bar.

The Magic Garden

The Magic Garden is an eccentric spot full of character. There’s a huge tent, mismatched furniture, candles, lanterns and string lights and a black cab you can sit in. The pub’s main focus is music and they consistently host up and coming artists covering all genres of music from reggae to hip hop and Latin. Come at night on the weekends to party, dance and listen to live music, or on Sundays for roasts, board games, and bloody Marys. They also have a killer happy hour from 5 to 7PM Monday through Friday.

Jazzlive at the Crypt

Jazzlive at the Crypt will transport you back to the 50s or 60s, when jazz was in its prime. With its stripped to the basics atmosphere and focus on performance, it’s definitely one for jazz lovers, as it hosts well-known and lesser-known, national and international jazz artists. The drinks are reasonably priced and the music is consistently good, bringing back regulars weekly. When planning your visit, make sure to check out their gig guide. They’re open every Friday and occasionally on Thursdays and Saturdays as well.

The CLF Art Cafe

The Chronic Love Foundation took over a 120-year-old, multi-level warehouse and now uses the four floors of the space to host music, film, and art events regularly. CLF started as a humanitarian project to educate and promote global change through creative projects, and the arts centre in the Bussey Building is an embodiment of their efforts. The space continually changes according to the scheduled events, but it regularly hosts bands and DJs. The basement of the cafe houses RYE WAX, a small shop selling vinyls, CDs, books and games. CLF is rapidly growing with the launch of their film and TV company, record label and the opening of their Art Lounge. During the day you can explore any of the current art projects, come for an evening film screening in the summer, or party through the night with their top-notch performers on the cutting edge of the music scene.
