Tenants for Trees

The unlikeliest of locations has just seen LA’s most decadent late-night venue take root. Adjacent to a bustling Trader Joe’s lies an indoor/outdoor European cocktail bar, secret live music venue and an outdoor airstream hosting a roster of top chefs offering their twist on classic movie snacks. The bouncers are as tough as the parking restrictions in Silver Lake so arrive early and take Uber.

Laurel Hardware

Los Angeles had a bit of a moment with hidden bars a few years back and like many Angeleno fads a lot of them came and went – except Laurel Hardware. Hidden in plain sight on Santa Monica Boulevard the outside resembles nothing more than a derelict hardware store. Step inside to reveal a moody, darkly lit bar and pretty courtyard filled with olive trees and tiny lights. Aside from their moorish watermelon martinis, Laurel Hardware’s lollipop sprouts and kale salad are some of the most talked about green giants.

This Houston Brothers not-so-secret speakeasy throws a party even Gatsby would be proud of. Enter the restored Victorian house and transport yourself to the 1920s as expert mixologists, known as The Dirty Dozen, create a revolving 12-cocktail menu that is delightfully gin based. The courtyard with its roaring fireplaces frequently hosts live jazz, burlesque dancers and skilled tight-rope walkers, while popping by the gift shop warrants a reading from the resident psychic.

Dirty Laundry

Find the hidden staircase, ring the right buzzer and descend underground. Rumoured to have been actor Rudolph Valentino’s secret bar, expect flickering Edison lightbulbs, suspender-clad bartenders and no phone signal. Replicating the way bootleg liquor was transported during prohibition, laundry baskets transport the alcohol, which is turned into frozen bacon marguerites and negronis.

The Nice Guy

Not quite a club but more than a restaurant, this reservation-only destination venue that regularly hosts Nicki Minaj and Kanye is one of the hardest places to get into in tinsel town. Affectionately known as “The Headquarters” by its revolver of high-profile clientele, the low-level lighting, marble-topped bar and intimate lounge tables ooze glamour.

EP & LP

The most dynamic duo LA has seen since Brad and Jen, the downstairs, laid-back Asian-style lounge EP serves up a small plates, while upstairs wood-clad rooftop LP overlooks the WeHo skyline and is filled by patrons who wouldn’t look out of place in a Calvin Klein commercial. The drinks are strong, the beats are heavy and as the night goes on the party gets louder.

Poppy

The Gucci-inspired atrium decked out in this season’s hottest floral print is a regular haunt for music royalty, with Drake throwing his birthday party here. Filled with storybook characters, mermaids pouring punch and only open on Thursdays, it’s wild, it’s lavish and it’s one guest list you’ll beg, borrow and steal to be on.

The legendary WeHo Sunday Funday takes place in full swing from mid-afternoon in this open-plan stone-walled space. Notorious in the gaybourhood, catch a ride on the free “Pick Me Up” shuttle bus and belt out Shania Twain classics remixed with Katy Perry’s dance hits. Free-flowing tequila and energetic dance divas top off the OTT affair.
