If Whole Foods and Postmates (the O.G Uber Eats) collaborated on a food hall, this would be it. For those centred on living an LA lifestyle there’s healthy options from celebrity chef Graham Elliot at Petit Harvest, fancy build-your-own sandwiches with fillings such as swordfish, smoked-trout and salmon at STRFSH and not-so-healthy choices from Fuku, the fried-chicken spot by Momofuku whose chicken sandos draw scores of fans at its Boston and New York locations.

Felix

A glass-fronted, climate-controlled pasta-making room is the first thing to greet you as you step foot in Felix, banishing any doubts you had about eating Italian food in Abbot Kinney. The pizzas are good, but forgo them for a few bowls of orecchiette mixed with spicy ragu and tonnarelli cacio e pepe coated in don’t-count-the-calories pools of cheese. Double your order of the salty focaccia soaked in olive oil – it’s so good you’ll want it in your packed lunch for the foreseeable future.

Fia Restaurant

Lined with luscious potted palms, covered in Tuscan gravel and lit by strings of fairy lights, Fia Restaurant makes dining feel like having dinner party in a celebrity’s back garden – kind of like if Lauren Conrad was going to host a grown-up Hills reunion. With flickering outdoor fireplaces and a petanque court, there’s an unmistakable Mediterranean feel which is echoed by the handmade pasta dishes (try the vegan lasagne made with almond-based béchamel sauce) and the seafood-heavy menu. The black cod drizzled with beurre de Paris makes a refreshing change from the too-sweet miso-imitations seen on a host of other menus.

Dialogue

Santa Monica isn’t all surfers and beach waves as this award-winning, upscale restaurant by Dave Beran proves. Tasting menus are inspired by the seasons with a focus on Californian produce. With only 18 intimate seats, reservations are essential.

Great White

Located right underneath the famous Venice “V”, this bustling brunch spot is everything you want from a boardwalk eatery. Their coastal California menu consists of simple dishes such as charred green grain bowls and the oh-so-Instagrammable blue-agave smoothie bowl.

Butcher’s Daughter

There’s no shortage of vegan eateries in LA and whether you swing that way or not, chances are you’ll find yourself waiving animal-produce at some point. The Butcher’s Daughter’s prime Abbott Kinney location certainly isn’t its only pull; the matcha lattes, hummus and crudités that resemble an elaborate floral bouquet and plant-based cocktails have all been butchered, carved and sliced in this vegetable slaughterhouse.

Farmshop

Local farmers and artisans lie at the heart of this restaurant-cum-market-shop. Nestled in the historic Brentwood County Mart the bakery serves golden goods such as freshly baked muffins and croissants, the market shelves consist of the finest cheese and charcuterie products, while the restaurant dishes up homely breakfast classics.

Huckleberry

Huckleberry is the perfect place to grab breakfast or lunch before heading to the beach. Everything is made on-site using the highest quality ingredients and farmers’ produce. The menu changes seasonally but we particularly like the fried-egg sandwich with rocket and Gruyère.

Sushi Roku

Turning the minimalist sushi house on its head with its rock interior and its mix of international produce, Sushi Roku combines Latin American flavours with staple ingredients from Europe to create an Asian-fusion menu that is both bold and diverse. With outposts all over the city, this lively Ocean Avenue branch presents the kind of artistry that only master sushi chefs are capable of. Don’t miss the seared albacore sashimi or crab dynamite with curry mayo. In true LA style, there’s also a dedicated gluten-free menu.

Sweetfin Poke

Los Angeles was surprisingly late to the poké party but this build-your-own version was worth the wait. Living up to their tag line ‘what you’re about to eat is not your Grandmothers poké’ add your favourite fish base to their savoury mix of shoyu and sesame oil throwing in some classic California produce such as the ever-present avocado.
