South African electronic DJ and producer, Black Coffee (real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo), made it his mission to bring the house music of where he grew up to the rest of the world. With a style dubbed “global fusion beats” – a deliciously novel combination of electro, house, afro and futurist jazz – he’s made a waves in the top tier of the international clubbing scene since cutting his teeth on home turf as a youngster.

The apex of his career so far has got to be bagging the hotly contested spot as resident headliner at Hï Ibiza, the spanking new super-club that took over from Space and the legendary Carl Cox on the White Isle just last year. We must admit that we weren’t that familiar with him prior to this, but we went to the opening party and boy, this guy is mega – and his 1.4 million Instagram followers seem to agree.

Difficult to pin down between weekends in Ibiza and weekdays in the studio, we snagged a few minutes with the decks virtuoso to chat fresh talent, Saturday nights and Drake’s sampling of “Superman” in “Get It Together”.

1. Which part of the island should we stay on?

Talamanca (about 15 minutes walk from Ibiza town).

2. Which is your favourite hotel?

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, which opened last year.

3. Talk us through your ultimate Ibiza night out.

A very special dinner with the Ibiza team to kick off every Saturday night of my residency. A fantastic meal with good people means great spirits. Then it would be back to my home on the island to relax and prepare for before heading to Hï Ibiza in time for my set at 3AM. It goes without saying that the music, dancing and vibes carry on right through until the sun comes up – and probably beyond that.

4. What’s the best place to watch the sunset?

The view of the sun setting over Es Vedrà watched from either Cala d’Hort or Torre del Pirata.

5. What’s on your Ibiza playlist?

Keinemusik (Rampa, Adam Port, &ME) – Muyè (Black Coffee Remix) From P60 with Lisa Shaw – Magic (Enoo Napa Remix) Argento Dust & BlaQRhythm – DJ Lindany (Fearless Boys) De Cave Man & Tonic Volts feat. Toshi – Mabudede (Kususa Remix)

6. Which up-and-coming DJs shall we look out for this year?

Themba, Enoo Napa and Da Capo.

7. What’s the one party not to miss this summer?

Every Saturday night at Hï Ibiza with me and an impeccable support line-up each week including Jamie Jones, Luciano, Lee Burridge, Virgil Abloh, Guy Gerber, The Black Madonna, Loco Dice and more.

8. What one thing should we bring back from Ibiza?

Unforgettable memories.

9. What’s in your SUITCASE for Ibiza?

Off-white kicks, sunglasses and my USB drive with all my music.
