mauritius boats

Taylor Morris Eyewear took some of our favourite people including Alicia Rountree, Millie Mackintosh and Zara Martin to discover Mauritius with Kenwood Travel, Le Touessrok, Beachcomber and Air Mauritius. Here are some of the places they visited alongside our insider travel tips.

A paradise island in the Indian Ocean, Mark Twain was not wrong when he famously remarked “Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius” following his visit in 1896.

Over a century later and 150KM of white-sand beaches, sparkling azure lagoons and striking volcanic landscapes have put the country on the map as a popular honeymoon destination – but endless activities, diverse wildlife and vibrant Creole culture make it a hot ticket for a holiday with friends too.

Here’s where to stay and play on Eden island.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Resort & Spa

The Taylor Morris gang spent part of their stay at what is billed as ‘the most romantic hotel in Mauritius’. Separate bungalow suites are arranged in crescents throughout lush tropical gardens, with the whole resort facing the sunset, giving you ample opportunity to bag that perfect holiday Insta shot. Unwind at the Clarins spa before heading for dinner at one of the hotel’s six restaurants, which include an Indian, Thai and Italian. With over 1,000 square metres of solar panels, you can relax in the knowledge that your stay is having as little environmental impact as possible.

Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa

This contemporary hotel is nestled on the unspoilt eastern coast of Mauritius, where fewer visitors mean your experience is ultra-private and that bit more personal. Get involved with an endless arrange of water sports and other island activities, while the plush spa provides welcome sanctuary from the midday sun. Gourmet guests will delight in the hotel’s cutting-edge restaurant offering, while live performances and buzzy bars ensure the fun continues into the early hours. Follow in the Taylor Morris team’s footsteps and dance on the beach by candlelight, followed by a morning trip to Shangri-La’s private island, Ilot Mangénie, where butlers are on hand to cater to your (hungover) whims.

Sea Karting

Explore Mauritius’ endless blue lagoons with the newest water sport to hit the waves: sea karting. Like a jet ski but much more comfortable (and much less easy to flip) this is the only way to beach hop in style and one of the best ways to discover the island’s hidden coastal spots.

Port Louis market

It’s easy not to leave your hotel when you’re somewhere like Mauritius, but no trip would be complete without a visit to the bustling capital of Port Louis. Alicia and Zara headed here sample some local delicacies from the market place on their recent trip, while it’s also the perfect place to pick up souvenirs, ranging from traditional textiles to local spices.

Château de Labourdonnais

This 19th-century neo-classical Italian residence set in stunning gardens in the north of the island is the perfect day-trip excursion if you need a break from the beach. Get home interior inspiration with a nose around the grand house before heading out to the lush orchards to learn about endemic plant species and marvel at 100-year-old mango trees. Finish up with some homemade all-natural sorbet at the tasting bar.

La Vanille Nature Reserve

This wildlife park down in the south of the island is one of the best ways to experience Mauritius’ rich flora and fauna. It’s home to the largest group of Aldabra tortoises in the world, as well as 2,000 crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas, bats, geckos and wild boars. Unfortunately, you won’t spot the island’s national animal, the dodo, however…

Be sure to block out some time for a visit to the picturesque village in the Rivière Noire district in Mauritius’ southwest. Known for its dramatic ‘seven-coloured earths’ landscape, make like Millie and fill your social media feed with epic pictures of the multi-tonal earth (no filter needed) before picking up some locally grown coffee beans to take home.
