Where to Drink and Dance in Geneva

Geneva wine

A grimily cool, cheap bar behind Cornavin train station in trendy Les Grottes (the old working class district). Any of their many dark corners are the perfect place to plan (and execute) mischief. ADDRESS: Place de Montbrillant, 1201 Geneva, +41 79 240 23 33

Bright and airy, this sleek wine bar is of impeccably high standard but wholly unpretentious. Pull up a stall and quaff huge glasses of rich, fruity wine alongside a fabulous selection of Italian meat and cheese, served up by notably friendly staff. ADDRESS: Rue des Eaux-Vives 63, 1207 Geneva, +41 22 700 67 38

A truly Bohemian hangout, this volunteer-run venue is welcoming and, frankly, a bit weird. Open every day of the week and hosting a range of events attracting people from all walks of life, go there to party, drink tea, play chess, or simply people-watch. ADDRESS: Rue du Grand-Pré 9, 1201 Geneva, +41 22 420 65 00

The most popular gay bar in town, brightly-coloured exteriors reflect the revelry within, as sparklers shoot from drinks served up by fishnet-clad drag queens. Everyone gets pretty silly. ADDRESS: Rue Lissignol 3, 1201 Geneva, +41 22 741 15 35

Lurking behind a hidden red door at the back of Cornavin station, this bar is shadowy, smoke-filled and sophisticated. The eclectic music attracts a diverse crowd of lustrous 20 to 30 somethings. ADDRESS: Rue des Amis 9, 1201 Geneva

If you’re craving a night of solid dancing, hop along at the weekend for a heady mix of house music and techno beats. Also hosts gay nights from time to time. ADDRESS: Chemin de la Gravière 9, 1227 Geneva

The crowd is young, the drinks cheap and the music cheerful. You’re left to your own devices at this roguish nightspot which always ends up being Really.Good.Fun. ADDRESS: Place des Volontaires 4, 1204 Geneva, +41 22 321 67 49
