gozo sunset

Though often overshadowed by its larger counterpart, Gozo –  the second of the two inhabited Maltese Islands, the other being Comino – is a worthy destination of its own. Its natural beauty, lo-fi vibe and physical remoteness have made it a go-to getaway spot for everyone from novelists, to serious divers and (legend has it) Sicilian mafiosos on the lam from the law. And while crowds do increase over the summer, Gozo still sees far less overnight tourism than Malta, making it an ideal spot to slow down, unplug and lose yourself a million miles away from everyday life.

Low-key doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Gozo’s natural wonders are legendary – you’ll find beautiful beaches; coastlines ideal for hiking; and caves and grottos straight out of Greek mythology. For the historically inclined, the island plays host to the ruins of a Neolithic temple thought to be one of the oldest structures in the world. Best of all, an extremely comprehensive bus system makes getting around a breeze. This makes it convenient to stay pretty much anywhere on the island, and depending on your desires and budget Gozo offers a variety of options, from luxury hotels to AirBnb guesthouses.
