The only walled North American town above Mexico, Quebec City has certainly mastered the art of preserving its heritage. The ancient fortifications, winding cobblestone streets and the stunning Chateau Frontenac looming over the picturesque old town will make you feel as though you’re in the south of France, while nearby skiing and waterfall hikes will let you get your fill of Canadian fresh air. Visiting in early spring? Hit up one of the many sugar shacks surrounding the city for maple tree tapping.

TO STAY

Château Frontenac

Known as the most photographed hotel in the world, this historic icon is the centerpiece of Quebec. Stay here for luxurious mornings with breakfast in bed, sweeping dining rooms and a gorgeous health club and spa complete with all the bells and whistles.

Hotel Le Germain

Located in Quebec’s old port, Le Germain is an easy walk to the city’s main sites. The gorgeous century-old hotel has maintained its original stone and woodwork yet has a great contemporary twist if you’re looking for a slightly more modern stay in the city. The service is unparalleled, while the hotel is also dog-friendly.

Ice Hotel Seasonal

The Ice Hotel is not for the faint-hearted; days are spent sipping cocktails out of ice glasses and popping in and out of hot tubs before stripping down to your long johns and sliding into a sub-zero sleeping bag. Not so into the icy midnight trip to the loo? With every room you rent in the Hotel de Glace, you’ll get a regular hotel room at the nearby Hotel Valcartier as well. But if you’re ready to dive in headfirst, there are a variety of themed rooms ranging from “adventure”, complete with dogsledding, to “arctic spas” which include a fireplace and private spa.
