Central Hong Kong

Taxis Taxis are plentiful and cheap, starting at 22 HKD (£1.80). There’s just one rule to remember, and that’s their colour codes. Red is for the urban taxis of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon (though each prefer to stay on their own side); blue is for Lantau and green is for the New Territories. For the airport, use the in-town check-in and airport express train.

Star Ferry If you’re travelling between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, take the city’s iconic cross-harbour Star Ferry. Steeped in history, this quick and cheerful transit across the water still offers the best panoramic views of the city’s famous skyline.

Uber Relaunched in Hong Kong this summer, download the app and get a choice of a classic Uber, an Uber-XL or an Uber-Taxi – a cashless booking app for the local red cabs.

Tram Cheap and convenient, hop on a tram and witness the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong firsthand. The MTR is quicker but the tram has more character.

Octopus Hong Kong Even if you are only planning to stay for a few days, it’s worth buying an Octopus Card from the MTR station, which allows you to load credit with cash and then spend it swiping through on MTRs, trams, buses and ferries instead of having to fiddle for change. Worried that you won’t use it all up? You can also use your credit to pay for things in coffee shops and Seven Eleven convenience stores.

Language English is commonly spoken in Hong Kong, as well as the local dialect Cantonese. Mandarin is increasingly common.
