HOTEL NAME: Geejam Hotel

COUNTRY, CITY: Portland, Jamaica

BEST FOR: A romantic getaway or families wanting to experience ‘The Other Jamaica’ away from the all inclusive resorts of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

ATMOSPHERE: Laid back and relaxed, Geejam was designed with the glamper in mind. Those that want to experience the jungle from the safety of their luxury cabin or personal Jacuzzi.

DESIGN: Tree-house chic. High up on a hill overlooking the dazzling Caribbean sea, the seven double rooms, housed in dark wooden cabins named after music genres, are scattered throughout the property, so each guest can wake up each morning to their own private part of the rainforest. There is also a private house with its own pool to rent.

WHAT’S COOKIN’ FOR BREAKFAST? All the regular breakfast delights. We suggest trying the Jamaican national dish for breakfast, ackee and saltfish, with a fresh fruit platter.

AND HOW ABOUT LUNCH AND DINNER? Served in the Bushbar, surrounded by fig trees and birds, Chef Nigel serves a mixture of Jamaican and Asian cuisine. For a twist on the standard jerk chicken try the lobster and jerk hollandaise – sensational.

IS THERE A BAR? The Bushbar. Have a Rum n’ Ting.

THE SERVICES OFFERED ARE… The Bushbar – restaurant, bar and lounge with a pool table overlooking the bay and tunes on the speakers. It is also home to the famous Geejam studios where the likes of Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg and Drake have all recorded.

SUITABLE FOR SOLO TRAVELLERS? Probably not, unless in need of some serious solo time away from civilisation.

WITHIN A FIVE MINUTE WALK, YOU CAN FIND: Geejam’s own private slice of paradise at its beach located at the foot of the property or the incredible Frenchman’s cove – the backdrop to many a wedding photo. Venture a bit further and you have the town of Port Antonio famed for it’s weekly street party Road Block Thursdays or head the other direction to surfing spot, Boston beach, where you’ll find the best jerk pork.

EASIEST FORM OF TRANSPORT TO AND FROM HOTEL: Port Antonio is a 3.5 hour drive from Montego Bay and 2 hours from Kingston airport. Alternatively you can privately organize to fly directly to the nearby Ken Jones Aerodrome for around £300.

FUN/WEIRD FACT: No Doubt recorded the Grammy-winning ‘Hey Baby’ here, whilst the staff fondly remember Amy Winehouse’s last visit.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Laid back luxury at its absolute best and a world away from the cheesy packaged Jamaican deals on offer in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Geejam is the top hotel in the parish dubbed ‘the other Jamaica’, Portland. Here you can sample the best of island life: beach life, jerk, dancehall, in a safe and welcoming environment.
