Paramount Hotel, New York

HOTEL NAME: Paramount Hotel

CITY, COUNTRY: New York, New York, USA

BEST FOR:  A tourist’s weekend in the Big Apple

AVERAGE PRICE P/NIGHT: ££ – Deluxe King Rooms start at £100 / $165  per night

ATMOSPHERE: Old-school Manhattan with a 21st century twist. Nestled in New York’s Theatre District, the Paramount Hotel provides its guests a respite of calm from the bright lights of the big city during the day. At night, anything goes in the hotel’s sexy subterranean supper club, the infamous Diamond Horseshoe.

DESIGN: While the hotel exterior exudes a French Renaissance feel, inside the aesthetic is very much urban cool. Rich blues, dark woods, and silver tones pervade the lobby, where guests can sit back and relax to the sexy beats of the resident DJ. Meanwhile style meets function in the hotel rooms, which are decked out with the latest technology and clean Art Deco designs.

WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST? If time is of the essence, head to Corso, the hotel’s Italian-style coffee bar located on the ground floor. A handcrafted, wood-roasted Aneri Tricaffe espresso should keep you fuelled for the day.

HOW ABOUT LUNCH AND DINNER? Jason Kallert, former chef of Tavern on the Green and Le Cirque, oversees a menu of classic American fare at the Paramount Bar & Grill, the hotel’s 2,500 square foot restaurant. Opt for the pre-theatre, prix-fixe dinner and return for a late-night, signature cocktail at the end of the evening.

WITHIN A FIVE MINUTE WALK, YOU CAN FIND: Times Square, Times Square, and more Times Square. Tourists willing to venture a little further can mosey on over to Bryant Park, the New York Public Library, Rockefeller Center, and MOMA.

SERVICES OFFERED: A 24-hour gym, a pop-up shop offering a heavily-curated selection of limited-edition goods, iPads and iMacs to use in the hotel lobby, and a multilingual concierge team to provide directions, make restaurant reservations, secure tickets to Broadway shows and arrange transportation around the city.

EASIEST FORM OF TRANSPORT TO AND FROM HOTEL: Barring traffic, the Paramount is only a 20-minute car ride from LaGuardia and 30 minutes from JFK and Newark. During your stay, getting around the city is a piece of cake, with the N, Q, R, B, D, F and M trains around the corner.

FUN/WEIRD FACT: The Diamond Horseshoe is currently home to the hottest show in town. From the creator of Sleep No More comes Queen of the Night – an unforgettable interactive dinner-and-show extravaganza. (Check out SUITCASE’s review here.)

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Given its Times Square location, the Paramount is ideal for New York newbies rather than seasoned veterans of the city. If a non-stop weekend of shopping, shows, and sightseeing is what you’re after, then this place has your name on it.
