Reinvigorating the glamorous 20s in the former Los Angeles Railway Building, The Hoxton Downtown LA is an Instagrammer’s dream come true, with a rooftop pool, a popular restaurant and easy access to the surrounding Arts District.
Nestled inside an old railway building dating back to 1922, this beaux-arts building is Downtown LA’s latest draw. Taking a cue from its past life as a garment factory, a candy shop and a grocery store, The Hoxton’s latest venture hopes to bring joy to the neighbourhood.
The lobby oozes 20s-themed splendour, with geometric patterns, clashing colours and marbled walls, while the rooftop pool and bar is an Instagrammer’s dream come true, with epic views, fringed umbrellas and dangling plants. Rooms have charming bauhaus touches with retro telephones, artisan ceramics and Marshall radios.
Eschew typical LA tourist traps in favour of Downtown – the neighbourhood is undergoing a revival of hipster restaurants, trendy cafés and old theatres. Wander around the Arts District for galleries and studios, shop to your heart’s content in the Fashion District and feast on Asian dishes in Chinatown or Little Tokyo.
Rooms are divided into four categories – Snug, Cosy, Roomy and Biggy – and all have gorgeous vistas across DTLA. Enter for chevron floors and wooden furniture complemented by plush pink armchairs and marbled vanity sinks. The rooms’ design cleverly pairs 20s-aesthetic of frosted glass, gold trimmings, dark wood and plenty of scalloped hems with splashes of House of Hackney prints (a nod to the group’s East London origins).
What’s for breakfast?
From the team behind New York’s favourite brunch spot Sunday in Brooklyn, head downstairs for breakfast at Sibling Rival. Slide into a grooved booth in the beaux arts-themed restaurant complete with latticed chairs, hanging plants and brass lanterns, before perusing the menu. Munch on bowls of granola and fresh fruit or go for the “Sibling scramble” for a plate piled high with eggs, bacon, potatoes griddled sourdough and pickled green tomatoes. Yet for a real American brunch, opt for a triple stack of “Sunday Pancakes” topped with a decadent praline syrup made with hazelnut butter whisked through with maple syrup.
How about lunch and dinner?
Sibling Rival offers an all-day menu of colourful salad bowls and snacks of spicy chicken wings and crispy bacon and potatoes doused in hot sauce and lemon crème fraîche. Alternatively, head to the top floor to settle in at Pilot, a rooftop restaurant serving Mediterranean-inspired food with views over Broadway. Dine on locally sourced seafood cooking over a fire before pootling on down to the hotel’s soft-serve bar for ice cream with your choice of toppings.
Is there a bar?
Sip on cocktails at the rooftop bar while watching the sun go down beyond that iconic LA skyline.
There are plenty of “Hox Perks” available to make your stay even better. Rooms have a kettle for making tea or coffee, and you can opt in for a free breakfast bag to be placed on outside your room consisting of a yoghurt pot, granola, fruit and orange juice. Complimentary shampoo, conditioner and body wash are in the walk-in showers,
