Il Salviatino is a picturesque 15th-century villa that sits in the sloping hills of Fiesole overlooking Florence, Tuscany. Inside, the villa blends modern sensibility and elegance into its historical foundations – 19th century frescoes and hand-crafted furnishings sit alongside hidden modern conveniences (televisions are placed discreetly behind large mirrors).

It’s a boutique hotel at 45 rooms but has the panache of a large, luxurious resort. With three pools, beautiful gardens and a spa, Il Salviatino is a destination in itself. While the hotel overlooks Florence it feels a world away from the hustle and bustle. Lounge in antique baths, eat risotto under a canopy of stars and gaze at a lit Duomo from your room.

There are 45 rooms and 22 suites. Think high ceilings, frescoed walls and all the modern conveniences. Beautiful furnishings by local artisans sit atop polished oak floors. The views of Florence aren’t bad either.

What’s for breakfast?

Included and served à la carte on the terrace. Expect plates of cheese, cured meats, granola, fruits and pastries as well as eggs.

How about lunch and dinner?

La Cucina del Salviatino serves Tuscan dishes, like pici con porcini and Cinta Senese pork in two settings. In the winter the restaurant moves into the painting-lined library and in the summer candlelit tables are set on the romantic terrace. Don’t skip the wine.

Is there a bar?

There is a small bar, but drinks are also served on any of the villa’s many terraces. Plus the villa’s restored library serves as the perfect place to knock back a few day or night – original floor-to-ceiling wood panelling, a selection of inspiring literature and a collection of fine liqueurs await guests.

Three pools, room service, Nespresso machine in-room, rain showers, spa, shuttles to Florence and access to hotel ‘ambassadors’ who can help with recommendations in Florence.

Things you should know

The staff are excellent and on hand if needed (when you leave your sunglasses in a bar in Fiesole and a staff member who lives in the town goes to get them for you). It’s a relatively new hotel and there are a few wrinkles to be ironed out – there were plastic tables and chairs on some of the terraces.

Within a short walk you can find…

Nothing, that’s the joy! A short car journey to Florence and Fiesole.
