isla holbox hammock

A tropical and nature-rich sanctuary situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico just two hours north of Cancun, peaceful Isla Holbox is the latest must-visit Mexican island destination. Despite some touting it as ‘the next Tulum’ on account of a number of boutique hotel and restaurant openings, the island retains a laid-back, remote and authentically Mexican feel. Far less preened than Tulum and with less of a tourist scene, there are no big resorts or cars and the local community are wholeheartedly focused on keeping it that way. Indeed, the beauty of this sleepy fishing town is the fact it remains more or less untouched.

To get there, get the bus or a private transfer from Cancun to Chiquila, then get the Holbox Express ferry across (which takes 20 minutes) and jump on a golf cart up the dirt track road into the town, which comprises a central square, a handful of authentic Mexican restaurants, bars and small boutiques.

Head to Holbox between December and March for long, sunny days and few storms, though to make the most of the island’s local animal inhabitants, book between June and August, when there’s the opportunity to swim with whale sharks and hang out with flamingoes.

Casa Sandra

For a unique and arty stay try Casa Sandra, owned by full-time artist Sandra Perez, who came to Holbox years ago looking for an inspiring spot to create and get close to nature. Situated on the beachfront, the hotel is filled with Mexican furniture, Cuban antiques and original works of art created by the owner herself, as well as Cuban artists such as Roberto Fabelo and Noel Morera. For the ultimate afternoon of relaxation, head to one of the cabana beds on its sandy chill out area at the front of the hotel.
