TO EAT

Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken

Gus’s is among the oldest fried chicken restaurant in Memphis. Though it originated in Mason, the city’s two branches have now become something of a  Memphian institution, serving what is arguably the best fried chicken – ever. The eateries’ run-down, original diner-like interiors make it feel like you’ve just stepped back in time.

Central BBQ

Considering Memphis prides itself on being the capital of the barbecue world, it’s nothing short of a big deal that locals say Central BBQ is the best place to enjoy the mouthwatering cuisine in the city. It serves all the southern barbecue delicacies you could possibly stomach, from creamy mac ‘n’ cheese, ribs served wet or dry and traditional banana pudding.

Earnestine and Hazel’s

Go to Earnestine and Hazel’s for the real soul food experience and stay for the jukebox operated by ghosts. That’s right, in downtown Memphis Earnestine and Hazel’s is a dive bar on the grounds of an old haunted brothel. It’s home to several locally famous ghouls and the equally well-known ‘soul burger’, which costs just $6 and has gained national notoriety for its mouthwatering ‘soul sauce’.
