Where?

Ohrid, Macedonia.

Why now?

For a lakeside holiday that isn’t tagged in every other Instagram post you see (we’re looking at you, Lake Como), book a weekend in Ohrid. This captivating town is perched on the shores of Lake Ohrid, which cuts into Albania, making a road trip along the water from one country into the other very tempting.

The town is one of the oldest in all of Europe, so the Old Quarter is an absolute treat to navigate before relaxing by the glimmering lake. Kayak, canoe or charter a boat for the day to make the most of the Tahiti-grade water – you can honestly see every rock and pebble at the bottom through the ultra-clear aquamarine ripples.

Don’t miss

The iconic St Jovan Kaneo church rests atop a cliff overlooking the pristine water, and makes for an excellent hiking destination. It might be the most photographed spot in all of Macedonia, but checking out the architecture and views is worth the steep walk up before running back down to cool off in the lake.

To stay, snag a room at the Aleksandar Villa, which is one of the best-equipped boutique hotels in the area with indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a gym. It’s a quick walk from the lake, too, making for easy back-and-forths between your bedroom and sundowners at Kaneo beach.
