TO EAT

Astrid y Gastón

Peru is the gastronomic capital of South America, and any doubters of that should head to Astrid y Gastón, the brainchild of the continent’s best-known chef, Gastón Acurio. Classic Peruvian dishes are paired with ethnic influences to bring you fine dining with a sublime twist. Expect dishes like Andean potatoes with yellow chilli-pepper crab and sea urchin, catch of the day with crunchy kañiwa and baby green peas and, for the more adventurous, Peking guinea pig. The 29-course tasting menu is perfect for anyone with a big appetite – and budget to match.

El Verídico de Fidel

Lovers of fish and seafood can’t leave Lima without digging into a bowl of fresh ceviche, and ask any local where to go and they’ll almost always suggest El Verídico de Fidel. This family-run restaurant has become an institution in Lima, and is known for its delicious leche de tigre – the salty, sour, spicy broth the ceviche comes in. The servings here are enormous: big bowls packed with fish, corn, sweet potato and shrimps that are swimming in broth. There are now four restaurants in the city, but the newest and swankiest branch is in Miraflores.

Matsuei

With an ocean on its doorstep and a large population of Japanese migrants, it’s no exaggeration to say that Lima might just offer the best sushi in the western hemisphere. Best of all is surely Matsuei, which is particularly famous for its sushi and sashimi. For those who prefer warm dishes, there are plenty of teriyakis and filleted-fish dishes, while the tempura is also excellent. Vegetarians don’t have to miss out either, as there are several fish-free dishes, such as the delicious grilled eggplant with sweet sesame sauce.

El Pan de la Chola

Arguably the best place for brunch in Miraflores – and indisputably the coolest – Pan de la Chola brings a beautiful new complexity to the term ‘bread and coffee’. Serving up simple sandwiches on homemade bread and warm, crusty loaves with slices of avocado, this is the place to start your Sunday. Their fresh bread, often toasty and crisp from the oven, is so delicious that a splash of olive oil and seasoning is all it needs. Fresh smoothies, juices and startlingly strong coffee are also available.
