Le Baron

Proving that Parisians still have the impressive ability to out-chic locals from all four corners of the globe, this Right Bank institution remains one of the sexiest spots in Shanghai. Probably because, as well as red bordello lighting and unisex bathrooms in place for “lovemaking” (according to the French owner), it is rather snug, designed with the tightly squeezed dimensions of a classic Parisian flat in mind.

Heyday

With its red velvet banquettes, marble floors and waitresses in traditional Chinese silk dresses, this packed nightclub is an homage to Shanghai’s 1930s jazz era, complete with singers crooning Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald songs. The cocktails are eclectic with an Asian twist – think chilli vodka with raspberry juice and orange foam.

Speak Low

This speakeasy-style drinking den is hidden behind a shop selling bartending equipment and spans four floors, each with its own concept. It starts with a lively, student-esque house party before moving to the chicer cocktail room and finally an intimate space selling ultra-premium drinks. And the top floor? Only lucky VIPs know the answer.
